Step 1 - Tube TV Buying Guide
Cathode
ray tube (CRT) televisions have been superceded by LCD and Plasma technology but they still have
2 distinct advantages over alternative
systems:
1.
Low new or secondhand prices if you can find them 2.
Superior Control Over Image
Quality
A CRT television is still one
of the best ways to display
an image. The average screen
size is now 28" to 32".
However the bigger the image
then the bigger the depth of
the television tube. This can
have a significant impact on
available living space within
a home.
CRT televisions generally have
better image quality over both
LCD and Plasma televisions on
normal television broadcasts
due to the fact that they have
superior control over the definition
of black and picture contrast.
Positives:
Gives you the best picture and
the best value for money. You
can typically buy a quality
28" CRT TV for less than
£300 and a quality 32"
for around £400.
Negatives:
The sheer physical size and
weight of the television. Typically
a 32" TV can weigh 65 kilogrammes.
Our
Verdict:
Secondhand or recycled tube televisions make ideal second sets for within the home but are no longer freely available from most retailers or manufacturers.
